Bunbury’s Brett Tucker is set to contest for a South West Upper House seat next month as a candidate of the Daylight Saving Party WA.
Mr Tucker, a Bunbury Catholic College graduate, said he helped form the party with his twin brother Wilson Tucker, the party leader, with the goal of passing legislation on daylight savings.
“The current state government does not seem interested in this issue,” he said.
“Since the party formed in September last year, this issue has been in the media a lot.”
Mr Tucker said he lives in Perth but still visits his extensive family in Bunbury.
“The majority of candidates running for the South West have not grown up here, including a number of micro party candidates who will be contesting the seat,” he said.
“I participate in a lot of local events and won the 3 Waters Running Festival 50 kilometre race in 2014.”
Western Australia has held four referendums on daylight savings in 1975, 1984, 1992 and 2009 and all were rejected.
The last one came after a three year trial of daylight savings in WA with 54.5 per cent against and 45.5 per cent in favour.
Mr Tucker said his party are not looking to hold another costly referendum.
“We would seek to pass a law quickly on behalf of the West Australians who we feel want daylight saving time reinstated,” he said.
“Since the last referendum there has been a demographic shift which votes in favour of daylight savings.
“There are more people in the 25 to 40-year-old age bracket along with plenty of people keen for an ease of doing business with the Eastern states.”
A preference deal between five micro parties – Family First, Liberal Democrats, Flux the System, Fluoride Free and Daylight Savings Party – has also been struck with the hopes of increasing each’s chance of winning a seat.
