It doesn’t get much more inspirational than having one of the country’s most well known athletes cheering you on from the sidelines, and that’s exactly what the young players of the Margaret River Hawks Basketball Under 12s and Under 14s team had over the weekend.
Champion boxer Danny Green was at the 2017 Basketball Country Championships to join the crowds of supporters keen to see the boys take on their regional rivals.
Two teams travelled from Margaret River, representing the Under 12s Division 2 and the Under 14s Division 3 at the tournament.
According to team spokesperson Kellene Harvey, both teams performed well in extremely hot conditions.
“The two teams did exceptionally well under scorching conditions at Warwick on Saturday, followed by games on the Sunday at Bendat Stadium,” Mrs Harvey said.
“The boys watched each other play, supporting and mentoring each other along the way, the Hawks team spirit was alive and well.”
The Under 14s team secured a place in the Grand Final on Sunday after leading the ladder after the second day of competition, and faced Collie whom they had defeated the previous day.
“Despite their win the day before, the rematch had the Hawks runners up on the day,” Mrs Harvey said.
Margaret River player Jonah Brooks was awarded an All Stars medal for his performance over the weekend.
Mrs Harvey said that the addition of Mr Green to the cheering squad was a great boost to the group’s enthusiasm and bolstered the crowd of supporters who tackled the smouldering conditions on court.
“A big thank you must go to our coaches and team managers for making this opportunity possible,” she said.
“Our under 12s coach Siobhan Mars and team manager Megan Chadwick, as well as our under 14s coach Nigel Harvey and team manager Renae Cassidy.”
“And a huge thank you to Danny Green and all who came along to support our very own green machines!”
