A record number of candidates are set to try their hand at winning a seat in the WA Upper House as a Member of the South West.
With just six seats on offer, 48 candidates have put their names forward in a bid to earn a spot in the Legislative Council.
At the last two elections in 2009 and 2013 the seats were won by Labor members Sally Talbot and Adele Farina, Liberal members Barry House, Robyn McSweeney and Nigel Hallett and Nationals member Colin Holt.
Mr House announced his retirement from politics in October 2015.
In June 2016, Mr Hallett quit the Liberal Party and has served the remainder of his term in office as a member of the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party. He will re-contest the seat as a member of his new party.
This year, the Liberal and Labor Parties would both be expected to hold onto their first two seats respectively.
For the Liberal Party this would elect former Capel MP Steve Thomas and former Shire of Manjimup president Wade De Campo. Current MLC Robyn McSweeney has been demoted to third on the ticket and is only an outside chance of winning another term.
Mrs Talbot and Mrs Farina have retained Labor’s top two spots on the South West ticket.
There are a small group of candidates in with a chance of winning the remaining two seats. Among them are Mr Holt, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation candidate Colin Tincknell and The Greens WA candidate Diane Evers.
