This Wednesday sees the start of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro competition, stop number two on the World Surfing League (WSL) tour.
With great conditions forecast for Day 1, there is a strong chance competition could shift to North Point in Gracetown, north of the planned Mainbreak location.
Although it has never happened before, North Point was discussed as a possible event location last year after conditions in Gracetown looked favourable.
Minor staging and scaffolding was set-up at the spot early last week, hinting at the possibility of a shift to Gracetown if conditions continued to impress.
The logistics surrounding such a move would pose a challenge for event organisers, but the pay-off could be huge with the thumping right hander more than capable of producing world class waves on its day.
Combined with the world’s top surfers taking on the top quality waves, spectators could be in for a once in a lifetime treat over the next ten days of competition.
Regardless of the break - Mainbreak, the Box and North Point are all excellent waves on their day, and all offer a challenge to even the strongest of professional surfers.
Given rumours that the Margaret River event or Victoria’s Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach could be cut from the WSL tour after this year, a chance to see the world's best in Margaret River could end up a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Don't miss it.
