So that’s it - “The summer you have when you’re not having a summer” is over, and the salmon have arrived.
They are starting to show up along this part of our coast in good numbers with plenty of fish landed by local anglers on both lures and baits.
It can pay to have some bait on hand when chasing salmon, as sometimes they won’t so much as look at a lure.
Richter plugs and the new clone lures have accounted for many fish with the trusty old twisty’s working well also.
Down South Camping & Outdoors is currently running a promotion which offers the chance to win $200 worth of Richter lures along with a lure wallet, by simply spending $20 or more on the Richter lure range.
One recent customer had some surprising luck with fly fishing gear, landing a salmon catch with the unconventional method, which is quite a difficult task.
Shore fishing has seen a mix of species with some mulloway and large skippy coming from the beaches along with some demersals being landed from the rock platforms.
There has been good reports of fish from those who have managed to get out on the water lately including dhuies, Bight’s red fish and a few gummy sharks being successfully landed.
In what has been an ordinary year for chasing crayfish due to the conditions being offered up, they are still around with some good reports of catches over the last couple of weeks, when the conditions have allowed people to get out and check their pots.
Divers over the past weeks have been reporting still scoring good size and numbers of crays, while the freedivers who spear have kept pretty quiet about their catches.
A few crew around lately have been asking how you would cook a salmon, so we have prepared a few suggestions below:
- - Smoke it in a fish smoker with some nice wine/hickory shavings;
- - Use salmon in healthy and delicious fish cakes;
- - Use fillets in a yummy Brazilian fish stew (Moqueca de Peixe) (thanks to Gabba at Aravina for this tip, my favourite!)
