The Margaret River Tennis Club hosted their Championship Finals late last month, attracting a large crowd of spectators under sunny skies keen to enjoy a day of great tennis.
The day began with the club’s Hot Shots Challenge and Junior Championship.
Club spokesperson Peta Lemmes said the competition saw courts packed with players.
“It was an awesome turn out with all twleve courts being used, and a great vibe at the club with lots of juniors and parents around,” she said.
The Streamline Tennis Hot Shots took to the courts with their coach Simon Cockburn.
The Hot Shots Challengers we given “good sport” gifts provided by sponsors, Tennis West.
“It's all about participating, not the end result, hot shots indeed,” Ms Lemmes said.
A Summer of Tennis series produced by the club’s Junior Coordinator Lisa Chandler allowed older players the opportunity to improve their skills through regular training and facing the ‘ball machine’, as well as game-based workshops.
At the conclusion of the Junior Championships, Scooter Liew was crowned winner while Jeremy Heyes took runner up spot.
Starting off the senior events in the afternoon was the men’s doubles final, won convincingly by the talented father and son team of Colin and Brendan Clark. The Clarks partnered up and were unstoppable, defeating Mike Bloxsome and Andre Botha in two sets 6-1, 6-2.

Next up was the Women’s Single Final, a close fought battle with Mikala Gerkan defeating Gerda Valentin 6-3,6-3.
The Men’s Single Final was a repeat of last year, with the apprentice defeating the teacher for the second year in a row.
Young gun Brendan Clark defeated his long term coach Simon Cockburn in two sets 6-4, 7-6.
Rounding out the day was the Ladies Doubles Final. The game was hard fought to the end with Beck O’Connell and Gerda Valentin narrowly defeating Marion McCrae and Clare O’Shea 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Also run on the action-packed championship day was the Men’s Plate Final, an epic battle finally won by the strong finishing Rowan Meiklejohn over Beau Cause 2-6, 6-4, 6-3
The Margaret River Tennis Club’s season wind up was hosted by the Margaret River Distilling Co, which Ms Lemmes said was the perfect spot for the club members to celebrate.
“Members, family and friends as well as committee members had a great time at the Distilling Co, where we held the championship and committee presentations for the season,” she said.
“It’s safe to say the Margaret River Tennis Club are in fine form!”
The Club’s 2017/18 season begins in Spring, and new players welcome for Pennants, Juniors, and Social games as well as kids and adults coaching.
