On Sunday afternoon members of the Augusta Margaret River State Emergency Service (AMRSES) took part in a real-life rescue scenario on the banks of the Margaret River.
Sent to rescue a person apparently injured after a rock climbing accident, teams arrived to the remote location thanks to the efficient ‘Gator’ all terrain vehicle.
According to the AMRSES’ Lewis Hawkins, the team of 16 rescue personnel were actively involved in the exercise.
“Communications officers were posted at two high locations to ensure clear radio coverage between teams,” Mr Hawkins said.
“All hands assisted to move the stretcher down the difficult terrain and transfer our casualty onto the boat, so he could be rushed to the ambulance at Wallcliffe House.”
The scenario was reminiscent of an incident which occurred in the region several years ago and Mr Hawkins said it was important for the group to experience the complexities of South West rescues.
Earlier this month the Augusta Margaret River SES teamed up with their Busselton counterparts and St John Ambulance officers in another remote training exercise in Carbunup.
The ‘Gator’ all terrain utility (ATU) is commonly used in regional rescues with surfers, hikers and rock climbers injured and stranded in remote areas transported to ambulance atop the rugged vehicle.
The group of dedicated community members meet weekly to take part in evening training while the more involved training scenarios are held every three months.
“Training like this improves our skills in working efficiently together in teams, and ensures we're ready when an urgent call comes,” Mr Hawkins said.
“We have members who are FIFO workers, or who are in and out of the region for various reasons.
“We are always looking for new members, it is a fantastic group to be involved with.
“If you’d like to meet amazing people, solve problems in teams and learn new skills, we’d love to meet you.”
The Augusta Margaret River State Emergency Service meets weekly at their headquarters on Clarke Road, Margaret River (next to the Community Garden) from 7pm to 9pm.
