Easter Saturday saw a huge pack of 257 swimmers enter the water for the 19th annual Gracetown Bay Swim, braving the chilly temperatures to break the record for the most participants the race has ever seen.
The Gracetown Tennis Club provided breakfast for the hungry athletes and their supporters, dishing out bacon and egg burgers and hosting a raffle to raise funds for the resurfacing of the group’s tennis courts.
Club secretary Heather Kelly said the raffle prizes were a big hit on the day.
“First, second and third prize all had crayfish or dhufish components, so they were very popular,” she said.
“First prize went to Nic Lacy, second to Linda Higgins and third to Leslie Reid.
“Fourth prize, a Bindi Nutrition Pack kindly donated by Libby Mettam, went to Lucy Bromell.”
Ms Kelly said the group raised an “astounding” $1900 and the funds would help with the resurfacing project.
“We would like to thank all the sponsors and the wider community for helping us, particularly Margaret River Free Range eggs, Woolworths, Coles and IGA, Olio Bello, Willyabrup Dreaming, Moonhaven, the Meiklejohn and Delfs family for the local seafood, Platform 32, Libby Mettam and all the wonderful club members who donated chocolates, time and a little bit of their sanity.”
The club is open to players of all skill levels and locals and visitors are invited to visit any Saturday afternoon. For more information contact Club President Bill Meiklejohn on 9755 6280.
