Margaret River Chef Josh Kelly has begun a new adventure aboard a 38 metre catamaran as it cruises through North Western Australia after a whirlwind few weeks saw him move from the South West.
Local foodie and identity Ian Parmenter was responsible for sharing a social media post on the popular Margaret River Community Noticeboard Facebook page, which boasts over 7,700 members.
“Mayday, mayday,” Mr Parmenter’s post read.
“Kimberley Expeditions has just had its chef disappear ahead of next season, the job begins next week, they’re looking for someone ASAP.”
The post garnered over sixty comments with many members tagging suggested candidates for the role.
Margaret River resident Lorie Linton, who has owned and operated Kimberley Expeditions for over 17 years alongside husband Nick, said they were spoilt for choice with applications.
“I actually had a very difficult decision to make with fantastic applications from really highly qualified and skilled chefs,” Mrs Linton said, adding the social media callout garnered far better results than other online employment websites.
Mr Kelly is responsible for all dining aboard the boat for up to 36 guests, and can be on call for up to five meals per day including morning and afternoon tea.
“It is a big job and it takes a certain kind of person to be at sea, away from family, but it is a fantastic opportunity with a great team of people and Josh is fitting in so well,” Mrs Linton said.
“His wife is on her way up and will join him on the next cruise which is wonderful news and a good sign that all is going well.”
The skilled chef has worked in a number of local kitchens including Riversmith and the now-defunct Wino’s, and has worked on houseboats in the Monte Bello Islands. Mrs Linton said Mr Kelly’s South West influence was instantly noticeable and was in line with the company’s push to promote the region.
“We have Margaret River wines on the table, we use local olive oil and other regional produce as much as we can,” she said.
“We are passionate about encouraging visitors to explore the South West whenever we can.”
