Could you survive on a diet of rice, lentils, chick peas, beans, sardines and olive oil, with nothing else for five days?
Amnesty Margaret River is calling for locals to join their inaugural Margaret River Rations Challenge Team, supporting Refugee Week by living on the same rations supplied to people living in refugee camps.
Amnesty Margaret River member Pauline McLeod said the challenge would see participants survive on rations to raise funds for the Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees (CARAD).
“CARAD is a group of WA volunteers who assist refugees released from detention onto the streets of Perth without family, financial or community support,” Mrs McLeod said.
“Amnesty Margaret River would love to see at least 50 locals, business owners, tradies, community and government workers, service providers and families to join our team.
The group aims to raise $5,000 towards the cause and will run the challenge alongside the National Rations Challenge of 7 days.
“The Margaret River chapter decided to put the community’s toe in the water and trial the local challenge for 5 days,” Mrs McLeod explained.
“Riverfresh IGA is very generously sponsoring the rations kits and assisting us in running the challenge.
“We have already had a number of people sign up for the challenge and would love to add more to that list before we start.”
Those who are feeling weak-willed during the challenge are able to make amends for a sneaky glass of wine or cup of coffee, portion of fruit or a slice of cake with a $5 fine, allowing participants to continue despite the odd ‘slip up’.
The Margaret River Rations Challenge starts on Monday June 19 and concludes Friday June 23.
Supporters unable to take part in the challenge can donate to the fundraiser or sponsor one of the challengers.
Local Refugee Week events will conclude with the screening of The Zookeeper’s Wife on Sunday June 25 at the Margaret River Cultural Centre.
