The Augusta Margaret River Hawks suffered a heartbreaking defeat at home against the Harvey Brunswick Leschenault Lions on Saturday.
Despite a strong crowd of supporters for both sides at Gloucester Park and the added morale boost of Josh Morgan’s 250th game celebrations, the Hawks struggled to start the engine, failing to touch the scoreboard while the Lions racked up a 33 point lead, kicking five goals in the first quarter, four from awarded free kicks.
The Hawks appeared frustrated at a number of decisions from the umpires and lacked energy while the Lions ran away with the first half, leading by 38 points at the major break.
AMR’s Mitch Lynn was everywhere at once, putting his body on the line in some fierce contests and seemingly appearing from nowhere to rescue the ball from the HBL wingmen.
HBL debuted Jonathon Fenwick in his first league game for the club, the Lions life member David Newman presenting the young player with league jumper.
The Hawks seemed to power back after the main break, dishing up some impressive marks and contests to their rivals as the sun went down and the Margaret River frost set in.
It wasn’t enough to keep up with the power of the Lions squad who led convincingly at every term, accurate kicking helping them over the line 13 goals to the Hawks 8 at the final siren.
The win puts the Lions at second on the ladder while the Hawks are in 8th position, facing South Bunbury away next Sunday.
