Colonial Brewing Co has won the Australian Beer Can Collectors Association (ABBCA) 2016 Beer Can of the Year award.
It is the second consecutive year that the brewery has won the award, which is voted on by all members of the group. Cans from around the country are entered in the competition and collectors vote for their favourite released throughout the year.
Last year Colonial picked up the award thanks to the Small Ale can, which was the first in Australia to be released with a 360-degree lid, allowing the entire top of the can to be removed.
The can was again unveiled alongside the Emergence Creative Festival and boasts artwork from Tim Kerr, Emma Jane Kim, Andrew Frazer, Dune Haggar, Ian Mutch and Joel Ebsworth.
Mat Lewis of the Creative Corner, which is responsible for the delivery of the annual festival said the group was proud to be part of the can creation again.
“This was the second time that we collaborated with Colonial and local artists on the concept around a beer brand launched at Emergence,” Mr Lewis said.
“Part of the Emergence philosophy is supporting local innovative creatives and the award shows that harnessing local talent and pairing with industry gives rise to national and international recognition.”
ABBCA President Luc Dupagne presented the award to Colonial’s Neil Brocklehurst on Saturday.
“It’s clear that the artwork and the interesting design is a favourite with our members, and we are very pleased to return to present the trophy to Colonial again,” he said.
Mr Brocklehurst said the recognition was a proud moment for the business. “It is great to know that the time and effort we put in to working with these talented local artists and the committment to being just a little bit different from the rest has been noticed, especially by a group such as the ABBCA,” he said.
“We are really appreciative of the award and I think it will look fantastic up there next to last year’s trophy.”
