Residents, retailers and business owners are celebrating the announcement of the town’s victory in the Dairy Australia 2017 Legendairy competition.
The dairying community now joins seven other capitals from across the country, selected for their resilience, community backing, future planning and support for the industry.
Jill Turton of the Cowaramup Retailers Association said the group was very proud to be awarded the title, which includes a $2,500 community grant.
“The grant will be used to create a heritage trail, where the famed Cowaramup cows will bear plaques explaining the importance of the dairy industry in the area,” she said.
“While many people love the cows and make the association with the town name, we are keen for even more to understand just how pivotal dairy is to the lives of the people who live here.”
Entrants were asked to describe what makes their town ‘legendairy’, and to nominate a project that will benefit the community.
Ms Turton said the association was thrilled with the result which was testament to the hardworking, cohesive Cowaramup community.
“We can be very proud that this recognition comes from a concerted effort to promote our fantastic dairy community in Cowaramup.”
A chance remains for the town to take out the major prize as Australia’s Legendairy capital, which will be announced in September, and includes a further $7,500 towards the selected local initiative.
