Two people have been arrested following a string of burglaries in the Margaret River and Busselton CBD areas.
According to police, a series of burglaries in the central retail and business districts of the towns over the last two months has seen cash the primary target, with windows and doors destroyed during the crime spree.
Tyrepower Margaret River was one of the latest businesses hit, losing a safe during a robbery last Monday despite the premises being equipped with security alarms and CCTV.
Three offenders were found in a Margaret River park later that day, where one offender was apprehended, while another was caught later in Busselton. The pair have been charged with aggravated burglary.
Police are still searching for the third offender, and they said the person was believed to be heading north from the region.
The arrests came after a joint operation between the Busselton and Margaret River Police. Officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Jason Van Der Ende said it was important for businesses to not keep any cash on their premises.
“With these types of burglaries the thieves are always after cash, if there is no cash on the premises then they will have less reason to try,” he said.
“If you see anything suspicious in your local community, contact the police or Crime Stoppers.”
Margaret River Senior Sergeant Brett Cassidy agreed that businesses needed to take necessary precautions, even in relatively quiet country towns.
“This is unusual for Margaret River so we are happy with the outcome,” Senior Sergeant Cassidy said.
“It is important that businesses keep themselves safe by installing alarms, CCTV and taking appropriate care.”
Residents observing any suspicious behaviour are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Margaret River Police on 9757 2222.
