The Margaret River Hawks Cricket Club played their first games for the year on the weekend, with Sorrento-Duncraig and Fremantle coming down for pre-season matches. With rain ruining any chance for a perfectly prepared turf wicket, Fremantle had to wait while the Hawks battled SDCC on the synthetic pitch.
Shane Joyce showed his wares early in game one while Paul “Polly” Farmer, Guy Shipley and Matt Cox showed why the club is excited about the season. John Mottershead has picked up some pace over the winter and is one of the juniors to watch. The Currell boys, Darcy and Angus bowled well while Ian again, somehow, got red ink with the bat.
The Hawks lost narrowly to SDCC, dismissed for 97 in 17 overs before the visitors eventually made 7/107 after their allotted 20 overs. It was then the Fremantle Club’s colts turn. It must be noted that Fremantle boast players that will likely be pushing for state selection in the future and Hawks were going to find this match challenging. Mottershead took a couple of wickets and Peter Crimp took a catch of the year contender. Joyce made 35 and Farmer chipped in with 15.
The season kicks off on October 14 and all players interested in playing cricket should call club President James Gannaway on 0408 899 994 to talk about joining up.
All abilities are welcomed and FIFO workers encouraged. Training is on Thursday from 4.30pm, all gear can be supplied and the club’s famous burgers are for sale in the clubrooms.
