Margaret River main street store Settlers Liquor has commenced operation of a new 20,000 kilowatt solar energy system, installed atop the Bussell Highway premises last week.
The 74 photovoltaic panels will supply energy to power the store’s refrigeration and lighting as well as computer and till systems.
Locally-born electrician Josh Payne said the system, installed by Perth company Technical Energy Services, would soon pay for itself.
“Seventy four panels will generate 27,000 units per year, so based on installation costs, the pay back in savings will come in a little over three years,” he said.

Settlers Liquor Manager Craig Robinson said the business was always looking for ways to reduce environmental impacts.
“We also recently installed LED globes throughout the store, which will save up to 70 per cent of the power we use for lighting”, he said.
The store also enforces a plastic bag ban and a rigorous recycling system, which Mr Robinson said was all part of the aim to keep Margaret River “clean and green”.
