While many of us have memories of gathering with neighbours for a barbecue, research shows Australians are becoming increasingly less connected to their communities. In fact, only 50 per cent say they would recognise their neighbour on the street. A national community and sustainability event, Garage Sale Trail is one way to bring people together. By encouraging communities across the country to hold garage sales on one big day of buying and selling, the event has facilitated thousands of new community connections since its inception in 2010.
Last year, more than 143,000 long-term community connections were made on the day. This means that each participant met an average of 11 people that they would stay in touch with on an ongoing basis.
This might be just a simple “hello” on the street, or perhaps even a marriage proposal. In a time when we are more isolated than ever, holding a garage sale and getting to know the neighbours can have significant social outcomes.
National community organisation Men’s Shed aims to advance the well-being and health of males while encouraging social inclusion. With 900 hubs across the country, Men’s Shed provides males with a safe, friendly and healing environment to work on meaningful projects.
“Participating in Garage Sale Trail is a great opportunity for our members to fundraise, connect with the people around them and be part of something bigger,” says David Helmers, CEO, Men’s Shed. This year, Men’s Sheds across the country will be selling hand-made wares and repurposed items to raise money to improve their facilities.
