Broken bones, neck injuries, snake bites and even a nail through the finger were just some of the scenarios thrown at mountain bike riders attending a two weekend course on riding and first aid in Margaret River.
Dirt Skills Margaret River hosted Survive First Aid for the Remote Area First Aid course. Students learned the basics of first aid and how to deal with situations out on the mountain bike trails where assistance can be hard to come by.
With the majority of the course being run outdoors and on the trails the students dealt with real life scenarios in real life environments.
Dirt Skills owner Dave Berry said first aid skills were essential for riders. “At Dirt Skills our main focus is teaching our clients how to ride safely on the trail, but sometimes crashes happen and it’s good for people to know what to do”.
‘Patients’ were prepared to make scenarios as real as possible and the students worked through the situations with assistance from instructors. Each student walked away with confidence to assist those in need as well as nationally recognised qualifications.
Pete Bourgeois said he now felt confident in dealing with emergency situations. “Now after completing this course I feel much more competent in dealing with crashes. First aid is as important to have in your kit as water and a spare inner tube.”
