As part of the Cape to Cape MTB event, students at Margaret River Primary School this week accepted a donation of riding equipment to bolster the school’s sports programs.
Cape to Cape MTB organisers said the initiative was intended to support the next generation of ‘MTB-ers’ in the region.
“With Margaret River the heart and soul of the event, it’s important for us to engage and give back to the local MTB community and where better to start than our Stage 4 Finish Line, the Margaret River Primary School.”
Students participate in a range of mountain biking programs and camps offered to children in Years 4,5 and MRPS Principal Aaron Thomas said the donation of equipment such as gloves, helmets, Camelbak hydration packs and mountain bikes would allow more local kids to get involved in the sport.
“We are really excited by the generous donations that will make sure that more students at our school have the opportunity to get involved in this amazing sport,” he said.
“Our school prides itself on making the most of the natural environment around us and our students spend a lot of time taking care of it.
“Mountain biking is an important part of our school community and we are pleased to be able to work with the Cape to Cape MTB.”
Utilising a number of trails across the South West Capes region, students can take part in 6-week programs or ongoing MTB sessions looking no further than their backyard for suitable trails and tracks.
The donation to the school last Thursday was made by wo of Cape to Cape MTB’s elite riders, Kyle Ward and last year’s overall Women’s Champion, Samara Sheppard.
The pair handed over two new mountain bikes and 10 child-sized helmets to the school as well as packs from Shimano and Camelback containing suitable MTB items including tools, pumps, pedals, hydration packs and water bottles.
As part of the MTB initiative, the Cape to Cape MTB is calling for donations from the community of child-sized equipment for the school.
"Without our help there are minimal resources and participation relies on student ownership of the essentials.”
A drop-off point for all donations will be located at the Finish Line of the event on Sunday October 22, where people can deposit donated items for the drive.
