Businesses in the South West have reacted favourably to the ‘Yes’ result in last week’s Same Sex Marriage Survey announcement, saying the news will be positive for the region’s wedding industry.
Aravina Estate’s Hayley Tobin said she was looking forward to welcome same sex weddings at the Yallingup venue, where commitment ceremonies had already been held.
“We are proud to support marriage equality and welcome same sex couples to celebrate their marriage at the Estate,” she said. “Myself and my husband Steve had our own marriage here several years ago and it was the most magical day.
“Australia finally has equality for marriage of same sex couples and it is a fantastic result. We look forward to welcoming same-sex wedding enquiries and trust that in the future we host many celebrations to give couples the same opportunity at love.”
Celebrant Anita Revel said she was thrilled with the news and was planning a pop up same sex marriage festival in Cowaramup.
“I couldn’t be happier with the result – finally gay couples will have the same legal rights as straight couples,” she said.
“I have conducted commitment ceremonies in the region and they are every bit as valid, extravagant and full of love as any wedding I’ve been a part of.
“We are planning a pop up same sex marriage festival to be held on our property in Cowaramup where couples will be able to come and be married on the day, it will be a big celebration of love.”
The festival date is pending the legalisation of the decision, which Ms Revel said was “a historic moment for Australia”.
“It’s pretty huge, economically and socially for our region, with each wedding guest requiring accommodation, meals, transport, then there’s shopping and other services. The flow on effect benefits most industries in the area.”
Ryan Cope of The Wedding DJ said the decision would bring a new wave of marriages to the region.
“It’s definitely great news for the wedding industry and the South West economy and we’re looking forward to an increase in bookings and being part of the celebrations once the law is passed.”
