The Augusta Margaret River branch of the State Emergency Service (AMRSES) will hold a special Open Day event next weekend aimed at highlighting the efforts and specialised training undertaken by the tireless volunteers associated with the group.
Volunteers are called upon at all times of the year to help with everything from fallen trees and roof emergencies during storms, to assisting fire crews in bushfire season and marine rescues on the water.
The local service has been operating for more than two decades, and according to training manager Beau Cawse, the contingent of local volunteers continues to evolve as the community grows.
"We currently have about 35 active members in the group, ranging in age from around 16 years to over 60 years of age," Mr Cawse said.
"The SES is all about preparing and looking out for our great community in emergency situations.
"The things we cover are emergencies like flooding, storm damage and preparedness, 4WD recovery, land searches, urban search and rescue, ambulance assistance, fire logistics, the list goes on.
"We also have a team that covers vertical and cave rescues."
As well as providing vital assistance in emergency situations, the SES members are also called upon to help with regional events such as the Leeuwin concerts, the Margaret River Agricultural Show, the Lions Club breakfasts and school fun runs.
Mr Cawse said the group enjoyed the support of their community, with businesses and individuals regularly taking steps to show their gratitude to the hard working teams after long days and nights in often dangerous situations, for which the group are well trained.
"We are always open to meeting new recruits, and we welcome people that are interested in joining the State Emergency Service to come by our headquarters any Monday night before our weekly training runs from 7pm to 9pm," he said.
"We will also be holding a special open day on Sunday April 7 starting at 2pm, where we will be having displays and activities, with a chance for locals to get involved and learn more about our unit.
"We will also have important information for residents on how to prepare for emergencies in and around their homes and properties."
