HANNAH Newstead of Margaret River Senior High School has been selected to participate in the Sir Charles Court Young Leaders Program in Perth.
Twenty-five students across the state - each from a different school - will attend the four-day program in July where they will be exposed to inspirational and challenging speakers and situations.
Nominated by the school, year 10 student Hannah was one of four applicants from MRSHS and believes she did well in the questions asked in the application, including ‘what makes you different from other applicants?’
"I said coming from a rural town makes me different," Hannah said.
She believes many applicants come from Perth.
Hannah said her leadership experience also helped impress judges.
She is a representative on the student council, a significant role for a year 10 student.
Teacher Michael Caudle said MRSHS students selected in the past have gone on to work in successful leadership roles, including Alex Temby, who has worked as principal policy adviser to WA Premier Colin Barnett, and lawyer Roxanne Moore.
Hannah said she was interested in a career in advertising, preferring a leadership position.
A joint initiative of Curtin University and the History Teachers Association of WA, the program has run since 1999.
It is open to all year 10 students in the State.
