Lightning starts bushfire

A FIRE has started 1km south of Caves Road after lightning struck the area last night.

A bushfire Watch and Act was issued at 3.10pm today for people 7km west-north-west of Augusta in Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.

The Department of Environment and Conservation reported that the bushfire is moving at a moderate speed in an east-south-easterly direction, parallel to Caves Road. Firefighters are expecting the wind to change to south-westerly later this afternoon.

Fire crews from the Department of Environment and Conservation, the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River and local volunteer bushfire brigades are on their way. Two fixed wing water bombers are being sent to assist ground crews.

People are advised to be aware of their bushfire survival plans.
