A 73-year-old sailor has washed up on a Perth beach after his yacht sank off the coast of WA during Tuesday's storms.

Police received an emergency mayday message via a radio from the yachtsman about 6.50pm.

Police spokesman Sam Dinnison said due to language difficulties officers were unsure of the circumstances "but it was clear that he'd had some engine troubles and his anchors were no longer secure and he had no sail."

The man is understood to be French and living in Perth.

Police asked the yachtsman to activate an EPIRB, which showed he was near Alkimos, 42 kilometres north-west of Perth.

"We lost radio communications with him after we found out the yacht was taking on water," Mr Dinnison said.

"We deployed water police and volunteers from Fremantle Sea Rescue out in the rough conditions and we also had Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group conduct a land search at Alkimos Beach.

About 10.50pm the Whitfords Sea Rescue Group found the missing yachtsman alive and wearing a life jacket on the beach at Alkimos.

Paramedics attended the scene and took the man to hospital.

The man's dog which was also on the yacht has not been found.
