MARGARET River's Jacob Willcox joined illustrious company for the third time, winning the WA State Surfing Championship at Flat Rocks in Geraldton on July 21.
Willcox won the blue ribbon U18 Junior Boys division, and with past winners over the years including Taj Burrow, James Catto, Ry Craike, Luke Campbell and Creed McTaggart, the U18 Junior Boys offers a fairly accurate prediction of future surfing success.
Willcox, the current ISA U16 World Champion put on a one man demolition derby, confirming his status as WA's next big thing by wrapping up the final heat of the weekend in an emphatic display.
His razor sharp forehand attack saw top scores of an 8.50 and a back up 8.27 lock in as Willcox amassed a combined total of 16.77 (from a possible 20), to claim his second victory of the series.
"To score fun waves and win is always a good feeling," Willcox said.
"I'm really looking forward to nationals and trying to make my way back into the Australian team to make world titles."
Fellow Margaret River product Josh Burke confirmed his place in the state team for the national titles finishing in third on the weekend with a score of 12.50 out of 20.
Mia McCarthy, also of Margaret River, won a close scoring U16 Cadet Girls final with 12.77 points out of a possible 20, edging ahead of Cottesloe surfer Denver Young who finished in second with 11.06 points out of 20.
Luciana Burke (Margaret River) finished in fourth just 0.26 points behind Young on 10.80 out of 20.In total, 15 surfers from Margaret River made their way onto the podium or into fourth place on the weekend, capping off a truly spectacular performance from our surfers during the state championships series.
