MARGARET River Boardriders Club broke a six-year drought to win the prestigious Surf Boardroom Surf League over archrivals Trigg Point Boardriders Club on Saturday.
With six surfers each, eight of the state’s most-established board riders clubs competed at Scarborough Beach in a series of 80-minute heats.
Dubbed “the Dream Team”, Team Margs surfed a faultless final with each surfer averaging seven out of 10 for each wave. They scored a 98-point total to defeat Trigg Point by 10 points, as well as Yallingup and Geraldton Boardriders Clubs respectively.
Matt Baldock of Margs was the most impressive surfer on the day, winning the coveted Perry Hatchett medal for best surfer in the final and highest combined two-wave total.
Team mate Jethro Hedstrom said, “Matt and I have been doing this competition for seven years.
“We won the first year we competed but have had six years of close calls and the team made errors in the finals so many times.
“I’m so stoked we have finally pulled it together and got the win.”
Matt and Jethro were accompanied by Margs surfers Creed McTaggart (Double Whammy), Jerome Forrest, Tom Innes (Senior) and Josh Burke (Junior), and they were led by team captain Andrew Sheridan, coach Brett Hardy and mascots Jaxon Chadwick and Bree Hastie.
The Margaret River Classic is the next event on the club’s calendar, open to nationwide competitors on November 2-4.
