MARGARET River Senior High School teacher Kerry Hastie is a finalist for the WA Premier’s Secondary Teacher of the Year.
The State finalists in the WA Education Awards 2012 were announced last week, with finalists in nine categories.
Nominated by a parent, Kerry co-ordinates and teaches the Senior School Engagement Program, an alternative program that aims to individualise education and prepare students for completing school.
She has worked on the program at the school since 2008, making it her full time job for the past three years.
“It’s exciting,” she said of her nomination. “It’s humbling, actually. The program itself is really quite significant. I can’t do it without a great administration team. It’s a real team effort.”
A panel of judges will visit the school and speak to staff and students before the final judging.
Cash prizes will be awarded to finalists and winners, to be put into professional development. The awards presentation breakfast will be held on December 3 in Perth.
