The Rubens are fast becoming a household name in music, they’ve sold out shows across Australia and internationally and now they are eight dates into their free Corona Sunsets tour.
The Mail caught up with The Rubens keyboardist Elliot Margin about how the tour has gone, a romanticised view of touring, the beginnings of a new record and their upcoming Parade Hotel gig.
Up to 800 people have been turning out for the Corona Sunset’s tour which Elliot said has gone well for the group so far with fully packed out shows and has resulted in a bit of a nostalgia trip for the group.
“We’re going back to venues we played when we were just starting out and now we’re going back to them for this free tour,” Elliot said.
“It’s great but there’s a big difference, when we played them originally they were populated by 15 or 20 people but now they’re absolutely packed out.”
For Elliot the groups rise to success has been a little crazy but he still sees touring as working.
“I think people on the outside look in and think it’s such an easy job to tour around but it’s still a flog, it’s still working everyday driving and sometimes playing two shows a day.”
But the “flog” doesn’t detract from the groups enjoyment of the job and now the group has begun work on their new record and have plans to expand their audience.
“We’re always looking for ways to push ourselves and expand our audience which would be nice to do with our new record when we’re finished.”
The Rubens are playing at The Parade Hotel in Bunbury on December 9 at 8pm.
The gig is free but get down early to be sure you don’t miss out.
