The Margaret River region’s reputation as the home of some of the country’s best underwater hockey players got a boost recently, with 17 local club members heading east to represent Western Australia in the 2017 Queensland Nationals in Palm Beach.
Junior coordinator Jenny Barr said the local representation at the competition ranged from juniors to adult players.
“The Margaret River team was the largest single club at what was the largest nationals event for underwater hockey to date,” Ms Barr said.
“WA was the only state to take a development team along, and that team included five Margaret River junior players.”
Western Australia’s Under 19s Women’s team and Under 19 Men’s team both took gold at the event, while the WA Under 15s team came home with a silver medal.
In the Masters category, the WA team was just pipped for bronze.
Ms Barr said the four Margaret River Under 19s Women’s players will also be heading to Tasmania for the World Championships later this year.
“We are always welcoming new players to this fantastic sport, and our juniors play every Friday all year round,” she said.
“We encourage any young people interested in finding out more about the sport to come to our next information night at the Rec centre.”
The Underwater Hockey Junior Information Night will be held on Friday March 3 at 5pm, poolside at the Margaret River Recreation Centre. For information call Jenny Barr on 0458 333 998.
