Margaret River bodyboarder Holden Ross has his sights set on the Australian National Titles next month, but he needs the help of his local community to reach his goal.
Currently the runner up Under 14s State Champion, Holden is an active member of the South West Body Boarding Club, Mandurah Body Boarding Club and Surfing Western Australia, and won the opportunity to represent his State at the upcoming titles in Tweed Heads, New South Wales.
The talented young rider’s mum Tennille Ross said he took up the sport just two years ago.
“This sport seen him build new friendships with kids of all ages and has been a really positive influence on him,” Mrs Ross said.
“There is a really great group of about ten boys in the 10 to15 age group who surf together, giving them independence and freedom.
“It’s such a healthy and positive lifestyle and we support Holden fully in his endeavours to do his best in competition as well as having fun with his mates.”
Mrs Ross said her son needed to raise around $2000 to help pay for travel and accommodation costs and was committed to raising those funds through a series of events.
“Holden uses his spare time to sell avocados, and then uses the funds to purchase his own boards, wetsuits and equipment which we are also really proud of,” she said.
“However for his trip to the East coast in August we need to raise approximately $2000 to cover the costs.
“This is such an amazing opportunity for him and very exciting and inspirational for his younger brother Zane and sister Alexis, who are six and five respectively.
“The boys in this local group of bodyboarders are really keen to be a part of the Margaret River High School Surfing Academy and they are hoping with good results from local kids at the Australian Surfing Titles, the school will look at implementing Body Boarding into this incredible program in the future.”
Holden Ross will hold a series of fundraisers this month which he hopes will secure the funds to send him to the competition.
