A shark advice was issued for Dead Finish Anchorage in Flinders Bay on Monday afternoon following the discovery of a whale carcass.
The whale carcass was reported by Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions at 1.00pm and while the carcass has been removed, officers warned that residue from where the carcass was beached may act as an attractant that could lead to sharks venturing close to the coast.
The warning issued by Shark Smart advised that the activity was not uncommon for the time of year and the area, but that beachgoers and water users should be particularly careful for the next week, and to adhere to any beach closures or warning signage.
Members of the public are asked to report any shark sightings to the Water Police on 9442 8600.
