Lara Armstrong is on a mission – to get Margaret River moving.
The owner and operator of Outloud Dance Studio says the key to a positive outlook and a healthy mind is to stay active.
“I’m a big promoter of movement especially in older members of our community, when it becomes more of a challenge for people to stay active,” Ms Armstrong said as she ran through some steps with a few of her mature age students.
“Dance isn’t just for kids and there are lots of ways you can keep your body moving that don’t mean learning lots of steps or building up a sweat.”
A series of classes at the Station Road dance studio offers plenty of opportunity for people to get involved.
“There is still availability for our adult Barre Fit classes, which are great for core, strengthening and body alignment. It’s a ballet-inspired class but no ballet experience is needed and it is suitable for all levels of fitness, Barre is a really popular class.”
Ms Armstrong said the Daggy Dancing sessions were some of her most popular, offering people the chance to get down and boogie with the latest video clips and retro favourites from musicals and movies of years past.
“Great laughs are had in this class, and it’s a really good fun option for people who want to dance but don’t want the commitment,” she said.
A special Senior Citizens Only class for dancers aged 55 and over is open to men and women who want to dance and exercise to keep their minds fit.
“One of the most important impacts of staying active as you grow older is that it does have a positive effect on your mental state, your brain function and coordination.
“Retaining muscle condition is very important especially as people get older, and there are of course the positive effects of music and dancing as a social exercise.”
The seniors class moves through different dance genres, including bootscooting, tapdance and ballroom, with different dance styles weekly.
Dance teacher Jade James leads a twice-weekly Sassy Dance class, which Ms Armstrong said was suited to the region’s younger dancers and mums.
“This one is for our young mums and those 20 and over who still like to whoop it up on the dancefloor,” she said. “High heels and great boots are encouraged, we dance in all shoe types. Jade is our brilliant choreographer and teachers and keeps this class young and fresh.
“Dance is a huge part of our existence and it’s something you can learn and never forget. I really enjoy seeing the benefits of dancing through the whole community.”
