The Margaret River Theatre Group’s upcoming musical, Disenchanted, promises a new take on generations of classic princess fairytales.
Director Ian Smith told the Mail that the show – featuring an all-female cast – aimed to flip the image of Hollywood’s perfect princesses on its head.
“Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, Snow White and Rapunzel… but were they really that sweet and innocent?”
“The princesses of Disenchanted certainly aren’t,” said Smith.
Snow White arrives with her posse of not-so-prim and proper princesses to turn the traditional idea of fairytale princesses around in an adults-only musical comedy revue.
“There is a lot of girl power in this show, it’s about celebrating the strength and resilience of women and sticking it to that old idea of damsels in distress, princesses that need rescuing.”
With auditions just around the corner, Smith said the theatre group was calling for a wide range of female performers.
“We are really encouraging all women aged 25 to 45 who would like to have a go at theatre, people who have either never stepped onto the stage, those who maybe did some acting in school, or people who are regular contributors to our shows.
“You don’t need to be experienced, and we’re used to nerves!
“What is great about Disenchanted is the cast, while all female, is a really diverse group of characters.
“All nationalities, shapes and sizes are welcomed – we need to cast our Pocahontas, Princess Jasmine, Ariel, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty to name a few, and we aren’t necessarily looking for the storybook image of the sparkling, perfect princess.”
The four-performance production will run at Stay Margaret River over two weeks in September-October, with potential princesses needing to be available for weekly rehearsals in the weeks prior to the show.
“Our productions are always lots of fun, we promise a high quality show for the audiences and we’ll be doing some fantastic musical numbers, with a few naughty bits here and there to keep everyone on their toes,” Smith said.
Those wanting to audition for a role in the musical will be asked to read a provided excerpt from the script and should be ready to sing a short tune of their choice.
“We are a bit like a big, slightly mad family, and we are looking forward to meeting some new faces during auditions, especially women with a great sense of humour who want to have a laugh along the way.
“We understand auditions can be scary, but we know there are some very talented people hiding around Margaret River and we can’t wait to meet them next week.”
‘Disenchanted’ auditions will be held at the Margaret River Community Centre (main building) on Wednesday June 20th from 7.00pm until 9.00pm.
