Dish washing detergent is fine if you are going to use a mop and squeegee because the suds help it to glide across the glass more easily. Glass cleaner can come in handy for more stubborn stains.
For a more natural approach, some people swear by a capful of methylated spirits or vinegar in a bucket of water (as well as the detergent if you like).
Tools
Professional window cleaners tend to use a squeegee – a tool that has a cloth cleaner (mop) on one side and a rubber blade to clean off.
Have an old towel on hand to mop up drips. Avoid paper towels – they tend to leave behind lint.
Newspaper works well to achieve a streak-free finish by absorbing the water after the wash, but don’t let it get too close to the edges of the window in case the ink marks the window sill.
Technique
- Start at the top and work down so that dirty water doesn’t drip onto areas you have already cleaned.
- Draw snakes on the window with your mop, starting at the top left and work your way across and down.
- Drag the squeegee in a snake pattern as well, cleaning the rubber on a rag/towel between strokes.
