Education Review | Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School: Aiding a smooth transition into high school

The transition into high school can be daunting for some students, but not at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School.

The school is home to one of the first purpose-built year 7 centres in the state, with a carefully tailored transition program that gradually introduces and integrates students into secondary school.

Head of School, Mr Michael Giles said from their very first day, students are encouraged to explore new territories and discover their individual talents.

“Staffed by specialist year 7 teachers, our unique and well-established program develops an awareness of secondary school expectations,” Mr Giles said.

“As a major entry point to the school, the program provides students with the support and security to establish close bonds within their year group.”

One program that aims to ease students’ transition into secondary school is Peer Support, whereby year 11 students act as peer mentors for the year 7 students.

The program builds strong relationships within students’ home groups, enabling year 11 students to develop their leadership skills and build a rapport with younger students.

“Peer Support allowed me to showcase my leadership skills and help younger students with the tough transition into high school,” said year 11 student, Alexa Swart.

“Ever since I took part in Peer Support in year 7, I knew I wanted to be a Peer Support leader.”

The year 7 transition program also extends into boarding, which provides students with access to a dedicated junior boarding co-ordinator, year 7 boarding units, earlier prep times and afternoon activities that help them establish friendships throughout boarding.
