Head to Settlers Tavern this Sunday to catch perennial country blues favourites the Ten Cent Shooters back for the launch of their new CD package, Retro

Guitarist Peter Woodward and multi-instrumentalist Scott Wise have been playing together since 1979 as the Ten Cent Shooters, and first got together with their bass player Sean Diggins in 1992 at Margaret River’s Spaghetti Bowl (now Burger Baby).

After urging from Sean, the band recorded their first album, Hop, in 1995, which sold thousands of copies both locally and on tours around Australia.

Hop was soon followed by Sweet To Mama, the title track of which received Triple J airplay (until they found out how old the band members were). Three more albums followed, the most recent, Downtown, recorded in 2009.

Having sold out of all five CDs, Wise decided to take advantage of Diggins’ state of the art audio technology and remaster all of the tracks to be released in a three disc set.

“I had done a lot of recording in various ABC and commercial recording sessions,” said Wise. “Taking control of the recording, mixing and mastering process was a natural step for us.

“Over the years we moved from old technology magnetic tape recordings to the first digital multitracks. In pursuit of a more authentic vintage sound we then moved to straight stereo recordings using vintage ribbon microphones, harder to perform but worth the trouble. The new CD package tracks the various albums through that era.

“I thought of the name Retro as it is a retrospective recording collection using retro equipment, but thanks to the remastering the sound is bigger and more spacious.”

The band will be fresh from playing Blues at Bridgetown and will be all warmed up and ready to go on their favourite turf, the Settlers Tavern verandah this Sunday November 11 from 3.30pm. CDs will be available at the show.
