Four years on and four records down - South West fluid groovers Blue Child Collective are set to take their newest offering around the country on a 13-date tour this summer, but not before a series of local shows.
The process from writing to recording to releasing their fourth album, Wake Up To The Sound, has been a two year journey for the five-piece.
The band have kept fans appetites whet by trickling out single after single from the release, and now the anticipation is finally over.
So far, every track dropped has found itself on the triple j airwaves, as well as getting traction and rotation on community stations.
The product of the collaboration between frontman Dan White, Kiwi darling Emjay Angeni, sax man Lindsay Baker and many musicians from the wider Collective, creates an album spanning countries, cultures and communities.
Featuring Bobby Alu on drums/percussion, Ken Allars on trumpet/keys, OJ Newcomb on bass and Angela Iimura on backing vocals, plus special features from Sol Carroll on vocals and Taro Terahara on bansuri, the album is a truly a collective effort.
Fittingly, the album was recorded at Yama-Nui Studio on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast by PaulieB, who has worked with The Beautiful Girls and Bobby Alu.
For every Blue Child Collective album, the group has an all encompassing theme or concept to ensure the fluidity from track to track.
Frontman Dan White explains the idea behind Wake Up To The Sound.
“The concept is inspired by the universe and how the universe is made up of this energy, vibrations and frequencies that create things like sound,” he said.
“As humans, we only perceive a fraction of what exists, there are so many things existing that we can’t hear or might not be able to see, a lot more exists – it is just in a different frequency.
“The idea is we are more than just ourselves, our words are the frequencies we use, and our thoughts, words and actions shape our lives.”
Blue Child Collective’s Wake Up to the Sound album tour will visit Saharan Daze, Cowaramup, on January 9,The River, Margaret River, on January 11 and Clancy’s Fish Pub, Dunsborough, on January 12.
