The Rotary Club of Margaret River has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $15,000 to be able to help the people of the Baguia community in Timor Leste.
The Club’s Julien Sanderson said the 56 kilometre journey to the remote community took over 3 hours.
“The trip takes you up into the mountains, and it is all very picturesque, but subsistence farming and very much forgotten by the Dili-centric government,” he said.
So far the club has helped Timor Leste schools with the installation of two water pumps, five playgrounds, the supply of 140 laptops, the establishment of two multipurpose sports courts, and communities with re-afforestation and building a solar powered cattle watering station and well and a number of smaller projects.
“After the recent trip to Baguia in September 2018, it became obvious that there were still many more projects that could be undertaken, to improve the daily lives of the community.
“It became clear that the funds available, would not be enough to cover the projects.
“We need your help to refurbish a fire smoke damaged building that will be used as a community hall as well as a lecture room for agricultural learning.
“There are also two schools that need electrical repairs, so that their one computer can be utilised, as well as further repairs to broken windows and roofing.
“The local communities do not have the money to buy materials, but they do have the skills to do most of the work.
“Rotary will manage the projects and funds as well as offer assistance.
“We are looking to raise $15,000 to enable the works to be done.”
