Seven young champions have been crowned on an exciting conclusion to the ninth stop of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps at Trigg Point with fun 1 to 2 feet peaks rolling consistently through Perth's coastline.
This event is regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers with close to 100 children competed over the Australia Day weekend.
Yallingup’s Remy North showed the signs of a future champion by posting a near perfect 9.07 out of 10 on his way to victory in the Under-12 Boys final.
North’s combined total of 14.14 was enough to hold off the talented Maverick Wilson from Wannanup in second place, with Margaret River’s Okie Frazer and Finn Sunderland third and fourth respectively.
“The waves have been fun,” said North.
“Thanks to all the boys for a great final.”
Throwing down an impressive display of high-performance surfing, Macklin Flynn kept his momentum rolling throughout the 14 Boys final, scoring a combined total of 12.56 (from a possible 20).
In a tight and closely fought matchup, Flynn fended off Brock Launders (Margaret River), Jake Hagan (Geraldton) and Ariel Hutchinson (Whale Beach in NSW).
"Going to the HPC has to be one of the best prizes you could possibly win," said Flynn.
"The Surfer Groms Comp is one of my favourite and I’m stoked to have won."
Macklin Flynn (Cowaramup) and Zali Hewson (Margaret River) were rewarded with an all-expenses paid, three-day Woolworths Surf Camp at the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre on the East Coast of Australia after claiming victory in the blue-ribbon Under-14 Boys and Girls divisions.
"The kids have been going absolutely mad this weekend. We’ve seen some serious all-day wetty wearers and the Surfer Groms Comps format allowed for maximum participation and exciting heats all the way through to the end,” said surf coach Mark Clift.
