It may have gone under the radar, but sporting royalty visited Margaret River this week.
Our local Roller Derby team, the Cabernet Savages, were delighted to host Gal of Fray from Rose City Rollers, Portland USA.
For those not yet in the know, the Rose City Rollers are the current holders of The Hydra Trophy, the most sought after trophy in Flat Track Roller Derby.
The Hydra Trophy is awarded annually to the top women’s flat track roller derby team in the world, as determined at the annual Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) Championships.
The 2018 Championship saw Rose City Rollers taking the trophy against Australia’s Victorian Roller Derby League.
Gal of Fray was awarded overall MVP for the entire championship season.
Our Cabernet Savages were lucky enough to receive a private training session run by Gal of Fray who passed on some of her extreme skating skills and amazing game strategy.
After hearing about our skate park from as far afield as the Gold Coast, Gal also coaxed some of our derby girls out of their comfort zone for some impressive bowl skating.
If that wasn’t enough, she tried out Roller Hockey for the first time with our home team street hockey club, The Crash Bandicoots, and loved every minute of it.
Well done Margaret River, you’ve impressed one of the best.
