With plenty of reports coming in due to some great fishing weather in the last month we can report that the salmon are here and the fishing has been epic.
Boaties have been out slaying the dhuies, pinks and nannygai. Not too many have missed out on getting their bag limit in the last few weeks. Divers have reported seeing plenty of fish in the shallower water and are still picking up the odd cray or two.
Our shore based fisho's have reported big whiting and flathead caught along the south west coast and they are now out to target the salmon. With the focus now being on the large schools of salmon that will grace our shores over the next two or so months we have geared up in the store.
We have got in the new Dr Hook lures, Richter plugs and Clone's with a single hook this year. Our Salmon Competition is even better this year as all you have to do is purchase over $20 worth of salmon gear to go in the draw to win either a lure pack worth over $200, an Ugly Stik fishing bag with two Richter plugs and two Richter Plugs as third.
We will also be sponsoring the annual Hamelin Bay Salmon fishing comp being held this year on 30th - 31st March, loads of prizes for heaps of different categories.
Until next month safe fishing and diving,
Roz Cummings. PS Keep an eye out in store for an old face returning - who could it be?!
The Salmon Run
Anglers across WA are being lured to the coast for WA's annual salmon run, giving a boost to tourism in every town from Esperance to Perth.
A Recfishwest spokesperson said fishing salmon was a great sport because they were so accessible and could be caught from some of WA's most beautiful beaches as the fish made their annual migration North.
More than 34,000 fishers now follow the Salmon School Tracker 2019 Facebook Page which shows this fish is a highly sought after species.
''Every year tens of thousands of Western Australian families eagerly await the annual run of these amazing sport fish," the spokesperson said
''Recfishwest believes the pristine white sandy beaches of WA coast combined with the splendid sports fishing qualities of this species truly makes this the world's best fishing on the world's best beaches."
The best salmon fishing is from the beach. Salmon can be caught any time of day, however, try fishing at dawn and dusk when salmon are often in close to the beach. Beach fishing for salmon using lures is popular. We recommend using metal slices, stick baits, poppers and shallow diving bibbed minnows. Access an elevated position such as a sand dune to see salmon schools moving past. Wear polarised sunglasses to help you spot salmon in the water. Individual Bag Limit: 4 (min size 300 mm)
Please note: Do not leave any fish remains on the beach, use any bins provided.
