After a decade of endurance racing in the region, organisers have confirmed that this year's Augusta Adventure Fest will be the last, after declining numbers forced a change in format that was not well received by participants.
According to a statement released by event organisers Rapid Ascent, the 2019 race will return to the original, pre-2018 structure.
"We tried a different format for the event in 2018 to try and boost registrations. Unfortunately, this change proved unpopular and saw participation numbers drop further than previous years," the statement read.
"Our aim is to make 2019 the biggest one yet and crystallise the spirit of the race. And we're super excited to announce entries are now open. You won't want to miss the 'last hurrah.'"
General Manager Sam Maffett thanked the Augusta community for 10 years of support and assistance.
"From volunteering at transition areas and providing water safety at sea to renting houses for accommodation and serving food in restaurants, you have always been there for us and we appreciate that," he said.
"This is obviously a decision that wasn't made lightly. The event was very successful for many years and was a marquee event for Rapid Ascent and for the region.
"We now feel it is time to move on though.
"We are proud of the event we all conducted and hope the Augusta locals feel equally proud hosting an event that meant so much to so many", Maffett added.
The race began in Dunsborough in 2006 before moving to Augusta in 2009.
2019 will see Augusta return to its original, more popular format and timetable, including the traditional non-stop Augusta Premier Adventure Race-beginning with the iconic run below Cape Leeuwin lighthouse.
"Rapid Ascent encourages the local community of Augusta to unite and ensure the last ever Augusta Adventure Fest is the best one yet.
"We want it remembered as an awesome adventure weekend and a true classic.
"It's also a chance to say thank you to loyal sponsors who've supported the event since 2006.
"Not to mention local councils and Tourism Western Australia and the Augusta warriors who've tackled the event in the past, or might be doing so for the first time in 2019."
The Augusta Adventure Fest will be held on November 2 and 3, 2019 in Augusta and surrounding locations.
