Margaret River's famed farmers market has once again been recognised as one of the country's finest collections of local produce, with the announcement of the 2019 delicious. produce awards finalists.
After taking out the winning title last year, the Margaret River Farmers Market has again been shortlisted, joining markets at Mullumbimby (NSW) and Willunga (SA) in finals judging.
Market coordinator Katrina Lombardo said the recognition was another accolade for the tireless work of the region's local producers and she was thrilled with the news.
"The Margaret River Regional Producers Association is excited to be chosen as a finalist again for most outstanding farmers market category in 2019," Ms Lombardo said.
"The delicious. awards celebrate produce from all around Australia and the producers themselves - the farmers and artisan food producers who invest so much time, hard work and money into their fresh food ventures.
"It's wonderful to acknowledge all their hard work. After all, where would we all be without them!"
The market is one of the most popular weekly events on the region's calendar, with crowds of locals and visitors arriving from the early hours and sourcing their South West produce in every type of weather.
Ms Lombardo said the strong sense of community among stallholders and their customers had grown new relationships within the industry.
"There many of our smaller farmers are connecting directly with restaurants and chefs such as Miki's, Leeuwin Estate and others, to celebrate the local seasonal food we have here," she said.
"It strengthens the Margaret River produce story and enables the smaller farmers to survive as small scale food producers which is hard in 2019."
Workshops, master classes and special programs such as the Gather & Feast lunches allow the market to expand the consumer knowledge base and introduce new suppliers.
"If we can teach people how to use local food, how to be resourceful with what's in the fridge and in the cupboard, about seasonal shopping and reducing waste, we are providing our patrons with the tools to make informed decisions in their homes.
"The market is enjoying a few new producers, Vasse Valley Hemp have joined us, and a few mushroom growers as well Turnwood Farm, The Sophisticated Beast and Soul Shrooms which is awesome, and delicious!"
The national winner will be announced on 19 August at the delicious. Harvey Norman Produce Awards.
