Richelle Piggot has two teenage sons who have played cricket for more than ten years and has watched a lot of cricket, so she was very aware of the McGrath Foundation and the Pink Test.
But the McGrath Breast Care Nurses weren't really front of her mind until she needed one.
"My breast cancer experience was totally overwhelming and these nurses are a lifeline," Richelle said.
"We desperately need more of these services in the rural regions as isolation is a huge issue for us. The time before I knew McGrath Breast Care Nurses were available was some of the hardest I've ever experienced."
Richelle's diagnosis was unexpected as she didn't carry the breast cancer gene, and especially as a sole parent, she said the experience was a rollercoaster.
"There were so many things I didn't know but Michelle was able to help to explain lots. In particular, I went into early menopause and Michelle was able to help me understand why and what to expect. I was shocked to find I wouldn't be able to have an immediate reconstruction after my mastectomy and Michelle helped me process this," she said.
Richelle said she was surprised by the financial impact and the amount of time she's had to have off work, as well as the number of decisions I've had to make.
"Michelle has been a fantastic support to me. She would come in and see me during chemotherapy and was someone to talk to during some of my most difficult days. Michelle was always very informative and listened to my concerns and constant worries.
"I was very sick and experienced a lot of side effects from chemotherapy - 19 in total! Michelle said it was one of the worst reactions she had ever seen and helped me deal with as many as possible.
"She would check in on me and reassure me. I was sick for five months but Michelle always had lots of information for my questions or would research accordingly if she was sure."
