Cowaramup Primary School students took time last week to pause and remember the tragic loss of lives in Gracetown on September 27, 1996.
On that day, five adults and four children were killed in a cliff collapse at Huzza's during a rainstorm, as a surf competition between Margaret River and Cowaramup primary schools took place.
More than twenty years later, Cowaramup PS Year 5/6 teacher Leesa Mathers said the school continued to place a strong emphasis on community and remembrance.
"Every year at the end of Term 3, we stop to remember those people lost in the Gracetown tragedy and share with our students about the memorials we have at Cowaramup Primary," Ms Mathers said.
"Each year we get our students together in Buddy Groups with students from Kindergarten to Year 6, and participate in fun activities whilst focusing on themes of 'Looking after Each Other' and 'Kindness Matters'."
Students took part in team-building games, making friendship bracelets, drama, Lego challenges, kindness postcards, sandcastle building, sunflower seed planting and bowls.
"It was a great way to finish the term and enjoy seeing everyone helping each other and having fun."
