Hollywood movie star Zac Efron has thanked his fans after reports he was medically evacuated from Papua New Guinea.

The 32-year-old US actor was flown to a private hospital in Brisbane after contracting a bacterial infection, The Sunday Telegraph reported.

Efron took to social media on Monday to confirm he had fallen ill while in the country where he was filming his new reality series.

"Very thankful to everyone who has reached out," Efron posted on Instagram.

"I did get sick in Papua New Guinea but I bounced back quick and finished an amazing three weeks in P.N.G."

Efron did not confirm in his post whether he was flown to Brisbane.

Australian medical evacuation company, Medical Rescue Group, told the newspaper they had recently flew a US citizen aged in his 30s from PNG to Brisbane.

Efron had been filming in PNG for an upcoming reality series titled Killing Zac Efron.

The series has been promoted as depicting Efron going off grid into the jungle of a remote island to "carve his own name in expedition history".
