Margaret River's AMR Dental has recently signed on to the Terracycle/Colgate Recycling Program and staff are encouraging people to dispose of their old dental items at the surgery.
"When we heard about the program, we were so excited to get on board," said Bec McInerney.
"We have a collection box in our reception area where members of our community can drop off old toothpaste tubes, floss containers, toothbrushes and electric toothbrush heads.
"Once we collect 5kg of waste, we ship it off to Terracycle and these products are remodelled to make recycled products.
"In return, we will have a donation made on our behalf to River Angels; the amazing organisation in town dedicated to helping local families who are affected by cancer."
AMR Dental also has collection boxes at Augusta X-treme Outdoor Sports, Witchy Roadhouse in Witchcliffe and Two Moody Cows in Cowaramup to make it easier for everyone to quickly drop off items.
The dental practice is keen to spread the word around the community, and has since adopted other recycling practices within the building.
"So far, the response has been incredible and we are just about ready to send off our first shipment," said Ms McInerney.
"We have just been notified that since the schemes inception, one million pieces of oral care waste has been diverted from landfill across Australia.
"Unfortunately, the world of dentistry uses high volumes of plastics in order to keep patients safe and instruments sterile - we are also now recycling plastic products also, and using biodegradable products where we can.
"It is great knowing many of these products would normally be thrown in the bin, and not only are we supporting such a wonderful local cause, we are also involved in a scheme so closely related to our business."
AMR Dental is located at 3 Station Rd, Margaret River and is open from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday. For more information visit amrdental.com.au
