The Margaret River Polocrosse Club began in 1950 when an enterprising group of young locals saw a polocrosse demonstration in Bunbury.
They practiced at Ian Thompson's property near Witchcliffe, south of Margaret River, before taking on their first tournament at Kojonup.
Margaret River hosted a NSW team in September 1958, with a combined Margaret River-South West team competing against NSW in an exhibition game.
With lots of growth and hard work, in February 1963 the club held its first State Championships tournament.
The club continued to progress in strength for many years eventually moving to the Witchcliffe Polocrosse Grounds in the 1960's, where players still practice today.
The patron of the club for many years until his death, was Sir Stewart Bovell who was also the patron for the Polocrosse Association of WA.
Sir Stewart was instrumental in helping the Margaret River Club obtain its current grounds at Witchcliffe, with hope that it would be able to retain the facility for the long term.
In 2020, the club is celebrating its 70th birthday, making it the oldest sporting club in the Margaret River district.
The Club's Annual Carnival will be held on the weekend of September 19 and 20 and is a highlight on the WA Polocrosse calendar, with the grounds located in a sought after destination with a relaxed atmosphere for players and spectators.
The Club works to provide a family-friendly event with many extra fun activities for all ages across the weekend attracting locals and visitors keen to check out the sport.
"Polocrosse is a sport for the whole family and is brilliant fun to watch," said a Club spokesperson.
"It's not uncommon in polocrosse for the parents to play in the same team as their children which makes this sport very all-inclusive and sets it apart from many others."
