The Hawks B's travelled to Bovell 4 to play against YOBS. Once again, we took a strong team on paper and we turned up ready to go. Grant Garstone won the toss and once again chose to bat. He and Harvey Fisher opened the batting with Fisher (3) being dismissed with the score at 15.
Tom McDonald joined Garstone and they both batted well, before Garstone was caught behind for a run a ball 36 but more importantly the two shared a 45 run partnership. Now entered the man who was about to become the hero of the day, David Scott Holmes.
McDonald (15) was clean bowled very shortly after, once again he showed plenty with some beautiful straight drives. Alan Seymour joined Holmesy and these two went about it nicely with some great batting which included some big hitting from Holmes and some great strike rotation by Seymour. Holmes bought up his fifty with great lofted shot over extra cover. Seymour (11) was then caught, but not after helping the hawks to a great position putting on a 59 run stand together.
Club stalwart Michael Earl entered with the game in a perfect position for the way he bats. These two Hawks couldn't have done it better, both sending the ball to and over the boundary many times. Plugga was out for 33 after another plus 50 partnership.
Bailey Kelly (10) then came and went trying to do the team thing and hit some quick runs, before Leigh Westcott (4) did exactly the same. Charlie Hart walked to the crease with aim to score runs but also get Holmes to his hundred. Gee, didn't he do this well. Holmes was on 84 when Hart joined him and he went 4,6,1,1.,.,4 to bring hundred up with beautiful cut shot.
His innings was a great achievement for batting through some good bowling and then getting the rewards when balls allowed him to free his arms. Charlie needs another mention here as he was still there at the end 9 not out but never did he get stuck at one end starving Holmes of the strike.
Final score 9/250. A fantastic score set against a very strong YOBS outfit.
Leigh and Bailey took the new ball, with Leigh breaking through first. Bail's had the ball swinging to much he was finding it hard to control, special mention to him though as he never once hesitated in opening the bowling even though it's not his favourite thing to do.
A pleasure for any captain young man. The Hawks were relentless in the field with effort from everyone in every position, this brought about the second wicket being a run out to Garstone. Yobs sent in big hitting Haig Colombera, so the Hawks brought on Jordan Stanbury to do his thing, picking up a wicket third ball. We starved YOBS so that it left them needing to hit big in order to get back in the game.
Stanbury finished with 3/37. 2 weeks in a row he has proved to be a handful for batsman. Vice captain Danny Weston was thrown the ball and bowled well, finishing with great figures 2/23 from 9 overs, bowling when batsman were looking to hit big. Bowling in partnerships was the highlight for Hawks restricting YOBS to all out for 205.
Big win to kick off C-Grade season
The C grade Hawks side travelled to Vasse on a hot and sunny Sunday afternoon looking for a win in their first game. Angus Currell lost the toss but were sent in to bowl as planned. Opening the bowling in a great partnership was Joel Lawrance and Cody Rogers. Cody took 4 wickets in his 5 overs whilst Joel applied pressure at the other end. As their spell finished Vasse were left at 4/47 after 9 overs.
Replacing the openers were Mark Jones and Darcy Currell respectively. Mark bowled for little reward 0/7 off his 4 overs plus the only maiden of the game, and Darcy who bowled well taking 3/7 all clean bowled off his 3 overs.
Next up was Jono Outred and Bailey Groves, like a laundromat, throwing down the spin cycle. Groves took a wicket with his first ball in just his second game of seniors cricket and finished with 2/16 off 2.
Papa John took the final wicket in his third over finishing up with 1/5. At the end of Vasse's innings, they stood at 10/86 after 21 overs, a very gettable score especially for the experienced batting lineup that was brought up.
The team fielded very well with Cody, Gareth Stewart and Michael Sorensen taking one catch and Al Wilkie taking two.
After the lunch break, Gareth and Adam Alexander Clarke took to the crease. Adam was unfortunately dismissed for nought in the second over but Gareth looked ready to go.
Angus replaced Adam and a solid 30 run partnership with Stewart was made before Stewart was unfortunately dismissed for 18. Al then came to the crease and another solid 20 run partnership was made before Angus was dismissed for 19.
Sorensen then took to the crease and the winning partnership was had, chasing down the 86 runs in 16 overs. Wilkie finished with the top score of 25* alongside Sorensen and his 17*.
A brilliant team effort earning the Hawks C grade their first win in the first game of the season.
Juniors step up for first ever games
Round 1 - MR Gold Stage 2
It was a wonderful morning that greeted us at Western Oval to kick off our 2020/21 Season. Our team included three debutants for the Hawks, with Xavier, Will and Lawsen all playing their first game of cricket ever.
Excellent leadership and guidance was provided throughout the game by Sam, Max, Mitch and Caspian; and with the inclusion of Tom coming up from Stage 1, we have a super group of kids to take on the 2020/21 season.
Very pleased with our first match performance and especially our first-game players who batted well and bowled even better. Will didn't take long to record he first catch, Lawsen took his first wicket with a cracking delivery and Xavier showed patience and control whilst batting to earn his first batting retirement.
MR Gold 5/64 (26 overs) defeated by MR Green 6/82 (26 overs). Caspian 13 runs n.o. / Tom 11 runs / Sam 1/6 (4 overs) / Max 1/8 (3 overs) / Mitch 1/5 (2 overs).
