The Hawks C Grade played their first game at Nippers Oval this year against the struggling Saint Marys. Hawks skipper Angus Currell won the toss, getting the Hawks off to a good start and sent the Saints in to bat. Opening the bowling was Joel Lawrance and Darcy Currell. Joel took the wicket of Saints captain Karl Rogers leaving them 1/15. Darcy who was struggling with a sore shoulder was then replaced by Taj Murphy who bowled well in partnership with Lawrence restricting runs, but couldn't find a breakthrough. Replacing Joel and Taj was debutant George Worsley and Jono Outred. Papa John found the breakthrough the Hawks were searching for whilst Worsley bowled well for no reward, leaving the Saints 2/30. Replacing George and Jono was Bailey Groves who continued his great form, taking the next wicket, 3/48 and Curtis Bacich taking the Saints opener and top scorer, leaving the saints 4/50 at the drinks break.
Bailey continued to bowl a couple of overs and was unlucky to not get another wicket. He was then replaced by Joel who bowled a ripping delivery, Saints 5/69. Meanwhile at the other end Darcy and Taj took turns every few overs for the rest of the innings, Darcy taking the first, 6/70 and Taj the second, 7/84. Finishing up the overs at the other end was Michael Sorensen and Worsley. With Sorro bowling beautiful line and length to take his first for the year and Worsley ending the innings with the final two wickets and the first of his seniors career. Saints were all out for 92 after 37 overs. Opening up the batting was Garrath Stewart and Adam Clark Alexander. Whilst Adam got off to a good start, his innings unfortunately came to an end with him being dismissed for one. Garrath had an amazing start to the batting innings and was belting fours all over the ground and set the Hawks up to win the game with bonus points. Unfortunately, however, he was dismissed at 30 runs, shortly after Adam. The partnership between Curtis and Angus didn't last very long either with Curtis out for one, bringing Sorensen to the crease. This partnership was looking good with both batsmen getting their eyes in before Angus got drawn into a wide ball and was caught behind, out for 5. At this point, the Hawks were on track to win the game with plenty of time to spare, however the rapid falling of wickets eclipsed an upset win. Luckily, Sorenson was a wall that didn't let a ball even look like getting him out and with Colin Baker at the other end, they steadied the ship and by the time Colin's knock was over and was dismissed for 10, only another 10 runs were needed. In came Jono for a quick 5 off 5 before unfortunately guiding one to slips. Joel came in and sealed the deal, the Hawks finishing up with 6/93 off 25 overs and securing bonus points. A great game full of its ups and downs to continue the Hawks successful season.
Hawks Juniors
YOBS Black had no hesitation in opting to bat first against Hawks Green on Saturday morning. With the outfield still damp the Hawks bowled extremely well, keeping YOBS to a miserly 32 runs for the loss of 5 wickets from the first 13 overs of play. Harvey McGovern led the way taking two wickets in his second over. YOBS batters began to score more freely in the second half of their innings, eventually being bowled out for 93. Hawks catching was a feature of their overall performance. It also saw Dylan Bateman taking his first catch wearing the wicket keeping gloves. McGovern and Zac Carlsen almost batted to retirement, both showing good shot selection and patience in seeing out some good bowling. However a few quick wickets saw the scorecard read 5 for 48 at the half way mark of the Hawks Green innings. Very disciplined batting saw Isaac Ahola through to retirement and have a 37 run partnership with Reuben Bain - leading Hawks Green to pass the YOBS Black score and finish with a score of 105.
